The best offline dictation app for Mac (2026)
Planes. Sketchy hotel Wi-Fi. Air-gapped machines. Or you just don't want your voice on anyone's server. I built Rhino because I wanted exactly this, so I'm biased. But several good apps work with Wi-Fi off. The difference is what they send when Wi-Fi is on.

Offline transcription isn't the same as offline cleanup
Lots of apps now run speech recognition on your Mac, so the raw transcript works on a plane. But the newer step, the AI pass that removes filler, fixes false starts and formats the text, often runs on a cloud AI even in apps that transcribe locally.
Offline, that step either quietly disappears or breaks. If cleanup is the reason you want the app, check that it runs on your Mac too.
"Works offline" vs "never goes online"
An app can work without internet and still send audio, text or analytics when it has a connection: for cloud models you picked, sync, or tracking.
If you want offline because of privacy, not Wi-Fi, the real question is what the app sends when it's online. Easiest test: run a network monitor like Little Snitch or LuLu and watch.
1. Rhino Voicemine
Mine. Speech recognition and AI cleanup both run on your Mac. So the full thing (punctuation, filler removal, optional spoken edits and smart formatting) works on a plane exactly like it does at your desk. Hold Fn, talk, let go.
When it's online, Rhino connects for two things only: checking for signed app updates and downloading models you ask for. No account. No tracking. No cloud model to accidentally turn on. Every code change has to pass an automated test that runs a real transcription and fails if the app opens any network connection. Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer only.
2. Apple Dictation
On Apple silicon, supported languages run on-device and work offline. Free and already installed. It types literally (no filler removal) and has no custom vocabulary.
3. VoiceInk
Open source (GPLv3) and built on whisper.cpp, so you can read exactly what it does with the network. Local transcription works offline. If you need everything to stay local, check which enhancement options you turn on.
4. superwhisper
The free tier runs local models and works offline. It also offers cloud models, so if offline or privacy is the point, keep a local model selected, especially for any mode that uses an AI rewrite.
5. MacWhisper
The best offline file transcription on Mac: interviews, lectures, recordings. Speaker labels and subtitle export on Pro. The Gumroad version also does live dictation.
What doesn't work offline
Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and Typeless process your speech in their cloud and need internet. That's also how they do their cleanup. Google Docs voice typing and Microsoft Word's Dictate are cloud too. Good products. Just not the answer to this question.
