The best dictation app for ADHD on Mac (2026)

The gap between having a thought and getting it written down is where a lot of ADHD brains lose it. Dictation closes that gap, if the tool is fast to start and forgiving of how you actually talk. I make one of these apps. Here's what I'd tell a friend.

Friction is the whole game

If starting a dictation means opening an app, clicking a button and waiting, the thought is gone before the mic turns on. The tools that stick work from wherever you already are. Hold a key in the email you're writing. Say it. Let go. Done. No new window to get distracted by.

Second thing: forgiveness. A lot of ADHD speech loops. You start a sentence, jump to a better idea, circle back, correct yourself. A word-for-word transcript of that is harder to use than a blank page. You want a tool that cuts the false starts and filler and hands you the sentence you meant.

What dictation won't fix

It won't organize your ideas for you, and it's not a treatment for anything. What it does is make it cheap to get a thought out of your head and into the place it needs to go: the reply you've been avoiding, a first draft, a note to self. Before the moment passes.

For a lot of people that's the difference between the email getting sent and sitting in drafts for three weeks.

Mine. Hold Fn anywhere, talk, let go, and clean text shows up at your cursor. No window to open, nothing to switch to, and recording starts the instant you press, even if the app you're in is slow. Double-press Fn to go hands-free if you think better pacing around.

Turn on spoken edits and you can change your mind out loud: "the meeting is Tuesday... actually, make that Thursday." Only the fixed version gets typed. Say "scrap all of that" to start over. The ums and restarts get cut either way.

One-time price, so there's no subscription to forget to cancel. Needs Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer.

On your Mac (Apple silicon, on-device dictation on)

Free and already there. Press the dictation shortcut and talk. Great way to find out if speaking works better for you than typing. The catch: it types literally, so every loop and restart lands in the text. That's usually the exact part that gets in the way.

3. Wispr Flow

a polished experience on every device
Price
$15/month, or $12/month billed yearly

On Wispr's servers

Excellent cleanup, fast, and on Mac, Windows and phone, so the habit works on your phone too. The trade-offs: it's cloud, and it's a subscription. Make sure you'll actually keep using it before you pay for the year.

Powerful and super configurable, with a free local tier. Real talk for ADHD folks: the settings are a rabbit hole. Some people love building the perfect setup. Some spend the whole afternoon on it instead of sending the email.

My pick

Pick the tool with the fewest steps between thought and text. For me that's one key, which is why Rhino works the way it does. But start with free Apple Dictation for three days. If you're using it, you'll know. If the ums and restarts drive you crazy, that's when to upgrade.

And skip anything that makes you spend an hour on settings before you get value. That hour is the enemy.

What I'd do today

  1. Open the email or message you've been avoiding the longest.
  2. Turn on Apple Dictation (System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation), press the shortcut, and just say what you'd say out loud. Send it.
  3. Do that three days in a row. If it's working, keep going. If the cleanup is the problem, try Rhino.
  4. Don't set up anything else today. One win beats a perfect system.

Questions

Does dictation help with ADHD?
A lot of people with ADHD find it makes writing easier to start. Talking is faster than typing, so you catch the thought before it slips. It's a tool, not a treatment, and it works best when starting takes a single key press.
What if I ramble or change my mind mid-sentence?
Pick an app with AI cleanup, which removes filler words and false starts. Rhino Voice also has optional spoken edits, so saying "actually, make that Thursday" replaces what came before instead of typing both.
What if I forget I'm recording?
Rhino Voice copies any recording of five minutes or more to your clipboard instead of pasting it, so a forgotten session doesn't dump a wall of text into whatever window is open. Press Esc to cancel anytime.
Is there a free option?
Apple Dictation is free and built into macOS, and superwhisper has a free local tier. Rhino Voice has no free tier, but there's a 30-day money-back guarantee.
