The best dictation app for RSI and carpal tunnel on Mac (2026)
If typing hurts, the right tool depends on how much it hurts. I make one of the apps below, and I'll tell you straight: if your RSI is bad, mine is not the first thing you should install. Here's how to match the tool to the problem.

Two different problems
Dictation apps type for you. You still press a key to start and use the mouse to click into the right box, fix a word, or hit Send. For a lot of people with wrist or forearm pain, that's enough. Typing is most of the strain, and taking most of it away is what gives you room to heal.
Voice control replaces the keyboard and mouse completely. Open apps, click buttons, select and fix text, all by voice. It takes longer to learn and it's slower for writing. But if touching the computer hurts, it's the only thing that actually helps.
A lot of people use both: voice control to drive, dictation for the words. And none of this replaces seeing a doctor or physical therapist, fixing your desk setup, and taking breaks.
1. macOS Voice Control
Apple's built-in voice control. Dictation plus commands like "click Send," "open Mail" and "select previous word," with numbered labels and a grid for clicking anything on screen. Turn it on in System Settings under Accessibility. Takes a week or two to feel natural. But it's already installed and it covers the whole machine.
2. Talon Voice
The most capable hands-free system out there, built by and for people with RSI. Voice commands, a phonetic alphabet for precise editing, optional eye tracking, and a big community command set. Cursorless adds code editing in VS Code by voice. Mac, Windows and Linux.
It's a real time investment. Weeks to get fluent. Worth it if you need to do technical work without your hands.
3. Rhino Voicemine
