The 7 best Wispr Flow alternatives in 2026
Wispr Flow is a good app. People leave it for two different reasons. The bill is $15 a month, or $144 a year at the annual rate, for something an Apple silicon Mac can now do by itself. And your dictation is processed on its servers, which matters when what you dictate is client notes, patient notes or unreleased work.

01 Rhino VoiceBest value
Best for: local dictation you pay for once
I built Rhino to keep Wispr Flow's hold a key, talk, release workflow without the cloud or the subscription. Speech recognition and the AI cleanup pass both run on your Mac, it works with Wi-Fi off, and there is no account and no cloud model to switch on.
It is small on purpose: no modes, no per-app profiles, no free tier. It passes text through verbatim when you dictate into Claude, ChatGPT or a terminal, and keeps a dictionary for the names you repeat. Pick it if you are on Apple silicon and want local dictation you pay for once.

03 VoiceInk
Best for: people who want to read the source
Open source, built on whisper.cpp, and sold as a one-time license. Its Power Mode, where your editor and your email client behave differently, is a good idea most of the field has not copied. Pick it if open source matters to you.

04 Apple Dictation
Best for: finding out whether you need to pay anyone
Turn this on before you buy anything. It is installed, it runs on-device, and on an Intel Mac it is the only local option here that runs at all. If you speak in clean finished sentences, you may be done. If you think out loud, you will spend the time you saved cleaning up after it.

Best for: staying in the cloud for less
If the price bothered you and the cloud did not, this is the obvious swap: roughly half the cost of Wispr Flow with similar polish. Be honest with yourself about which of the two problems you actually have.

Best for: a big free tier on every device
The most accurate app I tested. On my own voice it got 10 of 10 clips right with no fixing, against Rhino's 8 of 10. It also costs more: $144 a year on Pro billed annually, against Rhino's $20 once. The free tier of 8,000 words a week, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, is real daily use. Pick it if accuracy matters most and you are fine with the cloud.

07 MacWhisper
Best for: transcribing files, not live dictation
A lot of people searching for a dictation app actually need this one. MacWhisper turns recordings you already have into transcripts, with speaker labels and subtitle exports. Pick it if your work starts with an audio file.

- Speaker labels, subtitle export and batch jobs on Pro

When Wispr Flow is enough
Stay on Wispr Flow if you dictate on Windows or your phone as well as your Mac, if your company needs SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 or a signed BAA for a HIPAA-ready plan, or if you want the most finished product in the category and the cloud does not bother you. Those are real reasons, and nothing on this list beats it on all three.
Checked, but not ranked
Dragon Professional v16. Still sold, around $699 once, but Windows only. There has been no Mac version since 2018. See the Dragon alternatives page if that is where you are coming from.
macOS Voice Control. Free and built into macOS, and the answer if you want to drive your Mac by voice. It is a different job from writing, which is what Wispr Flow does.
How we checked
Every price comes from the app's own site, checked in September 2026, at the annual rate where one is offered. The ranking is for one person writing on an Apple silicon Mac. Nobody paid to be on this list, and Rhino's price on this page is read from the same code as the checkout button.
For accuracy I recorded 10 clips of my own voice and scored each app on whether the text needed fixing, accepting any reasonable formatting. In August 2026 Typeless got 10 of 10 and Rhino got 8 of 10, so Typeless is more accurate. Rhino is cheaper: $20 once against $144 a year for Typeless Pro billed annually. Your voice and your jargon are the only benchmark that predicts your experience, so try two of these before you commit.
How to switch
- Buy Rhino for $20 and download it for your Mac.
- Pick your trigger key. Fn works, and Rhino turns off the emoji popup it usually opens.
- Add the names and jargon you say every day to the dictionary.
- Quit Wispr Flow and cancel the subscription once you are happy.
