MacWhisper alternatives (2026): what to use instead, and when
Full disclosure: I make two apps that show up on this page, so I'm biased. I'll also say it straight: MacWhisper is excellent at what it does. People leave it for one of two reasons. They wanted live dictation, not file transcription. Or they want to pay nothing. Here's what to use for each.

First: which job do you actually have?
MacWhisper is a file transcription app. You give it a recording, it gives you a transcript with speaker labels and subtitle files. It's great at that, and if that's your job, you probably shouldn't switch.
A lot of people buy it wanting something else:
1. Live dictation. Talk, and the words show up in your email or doc. That's a dictation app.
2. Meeting notes. You don't want to record a file and import it. You want the meeting transcribed and summarized automatically. That's a meeting app.
3. Editing audio or video. You want to cut a podcast by deleting words in the transcript. That's Descript.
Pick the job, then pick the tool.
1. Aiko
A free Whisper-based transcription app for Mac and iPhone by Sindre Sorhus. Drop in a file, get a transcript, all on your device. No speaker labels or batch jobs, so it's lighter than MacWhisper Pro. But for the price of zero, it covers a lot of people.
2. Rhino Voicemine
Mine. Hold Fn, talk, let go, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is: email, Slack, docs, anywhere. An AI running on your Mac removes the ums and false starts. No window to switch to, no import step. Nothing leaves your Mac.
It can transcribe a file you drop in, and you can rerun old recordings through a different model. But it doesn't do speaker labels, subtitles or batch jobs. For those, keep MacWhisper. Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer only.
3. MeetMousemine
Also mine. If you were recording meetings and dropping the files into MacWhisper afterward, MeetMouse skips that. It transcribes your meetings on your Mac as they happen and coaches you live. No bot joins the call, and it's a one-time price.
4. superwhisper
A dictation app with a free local tier and tons of configuration. If you liked MacWhisper's model choices and want that flexibility for live dictation, this is the one. Runs on Windows and mobile too.
5. Otter.ai
Live meeting transcription, shared with your team, with a free tier. It's cloud, it stores your recordings, and its assistant can join your calls. If you picked MacWhisper because you wanted things on your Mac, this is the opposite trade.
6. Descript
If you transcribe so you can edit audio or video, Descript turns the transcript into the editor: delete a word, it's gone from the recording. It's a much bigger app than MacWhisper and a subscription, but for creators it replaces a whole workflow.
My pick
If you transcribe files: stay on MacWhisper, or use Aiko if you want free. Don't switch just to switch.
If you wanted to talk and have text appear: that's a different app. Rhino is what I built for exactly that.
If you're transcribing meetings: stop recording files. Use a meeting app. I'd pick MeetMouse because it stays on your Mac, but I made it, so try it and decide.

- Look at the last five things you ran through MacWhisper. Were they files, dictation, or meetings?
- Files: download Aiko (free) and compare it on one of them.
- Dictation: try Rhino for a week. Refund inside 30 days if it's not better.
- Meetings: try MeetMouse on your next call.
